I think someone else started that conversational thread and how sad is it that I can't remember my own answer? However, it happened that Blake Crouch was the next person up after you and, IIRC, he said: "The birth of my second child. Um, sorry."

Even though I got lucky and took on an adult with training wheels, I also had to adjust to sudden parenthood.

It seems like a burden when you have to start giving up certain things, but I learned quickly that it focuses me more on what needs to be done, followed but focusing on what I want most.

Surprisingly, it's made writing easier, since I'm not a hermit throwing myself into several kinds of work now. There's the day job, night school, and writing.

And they all take a back seat to the family.

All sounds entirely normal to me, mate. Nothing's as frustrating as your own offspring, and it's not so much selfishness as it is the entirely understandable human want for life not to change that much. For some people that's computer time, for others golf or time at the pub. For some it's having kids, others it's when they start going out with someone.

Nothing dickish about either. Dickishness starts when you don't give a rat's arse.

Thought #1: You settle in to parenthood. Soon it will seem second nature. Unfortunately, so will sacrificing what you want for your kids. But the rewards are great.

Thought #2: I struggle with the computer time thing myself. I have pretty much given up computer games, which apparently didn't matter all that much to me, but I still spend too much time goofing off when I should be either accomplishing something or having a little spouse time. So I guess I'm not much help here.

I say write what you want. The auto-bio twist that Patti and Mrs. Lippman mention would be great, I imagine.

What Laura said, but most importantly, what YOU decide. The marketplace is a changing wildebeest and don't you want to be the one who writes the book everyone else wants to copy?

You know what? Patti is on to something. Remember how you were joking about your TBR stack being split between books with black and pink spines? I would love to read something that captures your unique sensibility.
